The World Emotional Mapping

Tthanks to any Internet search engine it is now easy to build a semantic map of any concept. Not even trying to understand what is behind a single use of any one word, we know now how many times it is used in correlation with another. For our purpose we track the correlation between the keyword and geographic locations. According to the number of occurrences in the search results, the original keyword is located and represented on the map by a size proportionate to the amount of hits.

This automatic construction of the cartographic creation present a map of the world's emotions. The keyword "stress", for example, is used in association with thousands of city, region and country names in order to get the resulting number of hits from an Internet search engine. This operation is done again and again so that we get an accurate representation of how a word describing an emotion is related, on the English-speaking Web, to the geographic location on the map.

The WEM (World Emotional Mapping) is neither a scientific representation nor an objective portrait of the World emotions, but a demonstration of how the digital mass media monitor the World. One should notice that continents like Africa appear devoid of emotion on the map. In fact, it is only proportionaly not emotionally present on the Web when compared to other countries and their population.
